1. Plunge into Paradise at To Sua Ocean Trench
If you have only seen one image of Upolu, it’s likely to be the turquoise swimming hole with the iconic wooden rung ladder of the To Sua Ocean Trench.
This 30 m (98 ft)-deep coastal sinkhole has a cave on either side, one of which dips underwater leading to the ocean, so don’t attempt to swim through it. Ropes cross the swimming pool, so there’s something to hold onto in case there is a bit of current. Otherwise, floating with verdant reeds hanging from the cave walls above is a beautiful experience.
There are more sinkholes to peer into throughout the site, so be sure to wander through the manicured grounds of this attraction. You can also follow a footpath down to the coast to a classic Samoan swimming pool for more bathing opportunities.
Tours to To Sua Trench are available with Tai’s Native Experience, Autobots, Samoa Holidays & Events, Golden Eco Tours, Sunshine Samoa Tours, Coconut Tours and Samoa Surf & Turf Tours.
Location: Signposted along Main South Coast Road between Lotofaga and Vavau villages on Upolu’s south coast.

Try out nature’s waterslides at the Papase’ea Sliding Rocks!
After walking down an anxiously high number of steps, knowing that you have to get back up them again, you’ll come across the first and biggest slide that locals call the “men’s slide”: a near verticle 5-m (16-ft) slide.
Further down is the “kids’ slide”, a much less precarious slope with a little drop at the end for extra fun.
Finally, at the bottom, you have the “women’s slide”. Lots of fun, lots of laughs; what’s not to love? Avoid the busiest times, which tend to be the weekends, to get optimal slide time.

Tours to Papase’ea Sliding Rocks are available with Coconut Tours.
Location: Se’ese’e, Faleata District on the outskirts of Apia. The access road turns off Maugafolau Road near the University of the South Pacific campus.

Upolu has no lack of waterfalls, many of which you can oggle at through the 10 Best Waterfalls in Samoa, but certainly, one of Upolu’s most impressive is Sopoaga Falls.
Around 32 m (105 ft) and surrounded by jungle-clad cliffs from a high viewpoint, the waterfall provides a majestic photo opportunity.
The site with a viewing platform is also used for coconut husking demonstrations; ask at the counter (if someone’s around) if you would like to see one.
Tours to Sopoaga Falls are available with Tai’s Native Experience, Coconut Tours, Sunshine Samoa Tours and Samoa Surf & Turf Tours.
Location: North of Lotofoga village, just before the junction where the Main South Coast Road turns onto Le Mafa Pass Road. Southeast coast of Upolu.

Embark on an eco-friendly adventure with Manoa Tours as you cruise the lagoon along the southern coast of Upolu. This excursion offers a unique opportunity to observe turtles and other marine life in their natural habitat – all from the comfort of their boat! Better yet, there are snorkelling combined with turtle-watching tours available, should you want a fully immersive marine adventure.
Setting off from the Coconuts Beach Club Resort (you don’t have to be a guest here to access these tours), you’ll enjoy breathtaking views of the ocean and coastline during this approximately one-hour journey. The friendly team here are committed to responsible tourism, so while they don’t swim with the turtles, you’ll have plenty of chances to spot these magnificent creatures from the boat.
For those seeking a more complete experience, why not combine your turtle-watching with their “Snorkel + Turtle Tour”? This 2-3 hour adventure (depending on weather and ocean conditions) includes snorkelling among tropical fish and coral, turtle-spotting, swimming and a scenic boat ride.
Book the Turtle Watching & Snorkelling Boat Tour on Manoa Tours’ site.

Although Upolu is blessed with a number of freshwater springs, making for the most refreshing experience you can get in the hot Samoan sun, the most famous is the Piula Cave Pool.
A hit with travellers, locals and freshwater fish alike, the crystal clear waters provide a cooling swimming experience with caves to explore.
There are two cave entrances connected by a short underwater tunnel. Alternatively, you can walk a few metres around the cave to find the other entrance.
Tours to Piula Cave Pool are available with Sunshine Samoa Tours, Tai’s Native Experience, Coconut Tours and Samoa Surf & Turf Tours.

Vavau Beach offers a secluded and stunning beach destination on the south coast of Upolu.
Exclusively for day visitors, there are a number of fales set back from the white sands.
Enjoy picturesque islands dotted around a shallow lagoon and soak in the scenery of the bush-clad environment that tops the coastal cliffs on all sides.
Pay your entry fees at the access road. The community does a good job of keeping this beach clean.
Vavau Beach certainly isn’t the only beach to enjoy on Upolu, so check out the 10 Best Beaches on Upolu for more recommendations.
Tours to Vavau Beach are available with Coconut Tours.
Location: Vavau Beach Road, signposted off the Main South Coast Road between the villages of Lotofoga and Vavau on the south coast of Upolu.

Hire snorkelling gear from the kiosk and swim out to the white buoy to see an underwater trench brimming with thriving staghorn coral, hundreds of tropical fish species, starfish, octopus and, if you’re lucky, perhaps even some turtles.
That’s right, Palolo Deep Marine Reserve offers one of the most mesmerising snorkelling spots just 100 m (328 ft) from the shores of Apia.
Note, however, that the water is way too shallow for enjoyable snorkelling outside of high tide, so time your visit accordingly.
For more sweet snorkelling spots, check out The Best Snorkelling in Upolu: Top 10 Places to Snorkel.
Tours to Palolo Deep are available with Coconut Tours and Samoa Surf & Turf.
Location: Between the Marina and Vaiala Beach along Beach Road, Apia.

Fugalei Market is the largest market in Samoa, brimming with local handicrafts, fresh tropical fruit and vegetables and even authentic Samoan dishes.
On the other hand, there’s also the Samoa Women’s Association of Growers (SWAG) Market, which is a cute Saturday gathering with organic produce, art and local Samoan food products for sale.

© SamoaPocketGuide.com11. Take a Journey of “Fa’a Samoa” at Samoa Cultural Village
“Fa’a Samoa” means “The Samoan Way”, and you’ll certainly get the full flavour of the Samoan culture at Samoa Cultural Village.
Happening from 10 am to 12:30 pm, Tuesday to Friday, (check the schedule with Samoa Tourism) the experience starts with weaving your own plate for the umu. You’ll then be formally welcomed with an ‘ava ceremony before seeing how a traditional umu feast is prepared.
While your lunch is cooking, you’ll move between various fale to see how ‘ava bowls are carved and even witness a traditional pain-staking Samoan tatau (tattoo) being “applied”.
Finally, sit down with your freshly prepared umu lunch while watching a fiafia performance including fire dancing.

Leave the beaches of Upolu behind and discover another side of Upolu’s coast on the serene and secluded Coastal Walk.
Protected within the O Le Pupu Pu’e National Park, the one-hour return walk winds its way through lush pandanus forest before emerging on rocky lava cliffs. With the waves crashing below, seabirds occupying the horizon, and a number of coastal sea arches to uncover as you walk, this certainly is a special place to experience on foot.
Speaking of, closed footwear is recommended and the trail is mostly flat, making it suitable for most fitness levels.
Note that the 3 km (1.9 mi) road to get to the trail car park is a 4WD road but 2WD is usually Ok if taken with care. Otherwise, you can park at the information boards along the main road and walk to the Coastal Track, which makes the walk last a total of 2 hrs 30 mins return.
Tours to the Coastal Walk are available with Tai’s Native Experience and Coconut Tours.

If you don’t want to sift through it all yourself, free guided tours are available with passionate guides to show you through the six different galleries (in air-conditioned rooms, might we add) boasting 3,000-year-old Lapita pottery, collections from across the Pacific, colonisation history and even a small art exhibition.

The impeccably maintained grounds and villa of the famous author Robert Louis Stevenson (1850-1895), who lived in Samoa for the remaining four years of his life, are preserved for visitors to enjoy today.
While “Villa Vailima” has had a few makeovers over the years, the home has been filled with replicas to represent how this classic colonial home would have looked.
That’s not to say there aren’t a few original trinkets, books and personal belongings to admire, as well as stories to immerse in while taking the Robert Louis Stevenson Museum tour with one of the museum’s incredibly knowledgeable guides.
What’s more, the museum is a great option if the weather isn’t playing ball, as are the 15 Things to Do on Upolu on a Rainy Day.
Location: Signposted along Cross Island Road in the village of Avele, just south of Apia.
© SamoaPocketGuide.com16. … Then Hike Up Mt Vaea to Robert Louis Stevenson’s Tomb
Accessed via Vailima Botanical Garden (see point #16) or the Robert Louis Stevenson Museum next door, the Robert Louis Stevenson Tomb Trail not only leads you to the tomb of the famous author on Mt Vaea but reveals both fairytale-like rainforest and outstanding views of Apia.
There are two routes to choose from; the 30-minute rough and steep way or the 50-minute easier way that zigzags its way to the top. The latter passes by a magnificent banyan tree. Whichever you choose, good walking shoes are recommended.
For an enhanced experience, go with a local SIM card to scan the QR codes on the “Digital Nature Trail” along the way. This adds an exciting interactive element to your hike.
Location: RLS Museum – Signposted along Cross Island Road in the village of Avele, just south of Apia. The walk can be found at a clearing in the forest between the Garden Toilets and the museum (you’ll see the sign for the Tomb Track). Vailima Botanical Garden – See directions below.

Your evening entertainment on Upolu is sorted with its fiafia nights! “Fiafia” means “happy” in Samoan, which follows an equation that can’t help but put a smile on the faces of locals and visitors alike.
Many will start with an ‘ava (kava) welcoming ceremony before guests are treated to a buffet of Samoan staples and international favourites.
Once your stomach is gleeful, the show can get underway with cultural Pacifika dancing and, usually, the highlight of the show, siva afi, which is Samoa’s very own knife fire-dancing in the homeland where Polynesian fire dancing originated!

© SamoaPocketGuide.com25. Snorkel at the Savaia Giant Clam Sanctuary
Pay your entry fees, go down the steps and slip on your mask, snorkel and fins (rentals are available on-site) for an adventure with giant clams at the Savaia Giant Clam Sanctuary!
You’ll be amazed at how gargantuan these shelled specimens can get as you explore the waters beyond the white-roped buoys – absolutely best admired at high tide, might we add.
First, you’ll need to swim over a section of sand before reaching the white buoys that cordon off the marine reserve area. You’ll see hundreds of small clams forming a pleasingly shelly pattern on the floor, while you might also be lucky to see a turtle or two.
Swim around a little bit more (keeping an eye on a reference point on land, as there can be a little bit of current), and it won’t be long until you find the giant clams! Needless to say, you shouldn’t touch these feisty shellfish…
Snorkelling tours to Savaia Giant Clam Sanctuary are available with Sunshine Samoa Tours, Samoa Surf & Turf Tours and Tai’s Native Experience.
Note that local regulations require you to apply sunscreen at least one hour before swimming with the giant clams, so slap it on early.
Location: Savaia village along Main South Coast Road (near Le Valasi’s Beach Fales) on the southwest coast of Upolu.
© SamoaPocketGuide.com26. Take in the Views of Papapapaitai Falls
Plunging 100 m (328 ft) into the distance rainforest, Papapapaitai Falls is one of the highest waterfalls in Samoa. With it just available to view for free along the Cross Island Road, there’s no reason not to check it out!
The waterfall is viewed from a car parking area with railings to stand behind, which is, admittedly, sometimes a little overgrown. Nevertheless, the untouched jungle of the area adds to the Jurassic flair.
Tours to Papapapaitai Falls are available with Tai’s Native Experience, Coconut Tours, Sunshine Samoa Tours and Samoa Surf & Turf Tours.
Location: Signposted along the Cross Island Road, approximately 14 km (8.7 mi) south of Apia.
© SamoaPocketGuide.com27. Surf, Swim or Sunbathe at Aganoa Beach
One of your more secluded beaches on Upolu, Aganoa Beach is well worth the journey (and 4WD/high-clearance vehicle). After an approximately 3 km (1.9 mi) rough dirt track through the forest with plenty of small hills – keep an eye out for kingfisher birds – you’ll reach the deep-water crescent-shaped black-sand Aganoa Beach.
There are no facilities here (and often, not many other people), so be prepared to be self-sufficient and look after yourselves in case of strong currents. In fact, these conditions are what make Aganoa excellent for surfing between April and September – find out more in the 10 Best Places to Surf in Samoa.
Note, this beach is not to be confused with the Aganoa surf beach on Savai’i.
Location: Signposted along Main South Coast Road at the western end of Sa’agafou village on the south coast of Upolu.
© SamoaPocketGuide.com28. Discover the Famous “Ma Tree”
“Ma” meaning “shame”, the Ma Tree was named by the paramount chief of A’opo on Savai’i, possibly due to the uniqueness of this tree compared to other rainforest species, such as its silver-brown patches under the leaves and its occurrence in solitary patches.
Most notable about O Le Pupu Pu’e National Park‘s Ma Tree, however, are the giant buttress roots extending metres around its base.
The family-friendly walk to the Ma Tree is only 780 m (853 yards) from the well-established car park and information boards in the National Park. For more family-friendly activities, check out the 10 Things to Do on Upolu with Kids.
Location: O Le Pupu Pu’e National Park, at the information boards (not the Visitor Centre) along Main South Coast Road between Sa’agafou and Saleilua villages on the south coast of Upolu.

Fill up the gas tank and hit the glorious Le Mafa Pass and Fagaloa Bay Scenic Drive, which can both be enjoyed on the same road trip to the eastern side of Upolu. Le Mafa Pass is the section of road below Fagaloa Bay where the high vantage points reveal jungle-clad mountains around just about every corner.
After Le Mafa Pass and approximately 5 km (3.1 mi) north along Richardson Road is the turn-off on an unsealed road to Fagaloa’s narrow bay and sheer mountainous scenery with numerous cascading waterfalls and villages to admire.

© SamoaPocketGuide.com35. Go On a Canyoning Adventure
Less of a “walk” than it is a canyoning expedition along the gorge with never-ending cascades of waterfalls, the “Falease’ela River Walk” is an epic excursion for the adventurous!
Access this piece of river paradise with Olsen and the local boys from Lalotalie ECAT Ventures, who will gladly take you through the gorge, with each waterfall getting more grandiose than the next!
If you’re feeling brave, the boys can show you the best jumping spots – even as high as 20 m/66 ft (they’ll certainly be doing it) – but you’re in no way pressured to do the crazy if you prefer to swim and take in the rainforest scenery that is preserved as a conservation area.
Oh, but you will get wet – soaked, in fact, so closed shoes that you don’t mind submerging in water, as well as a T-shirt and shorts that will get the same treatment, are recommended.
Location: Falease’ela village in Lefaga Bay on the southwest coast of Upolu. Lalotalie ECAT Ventures’ base is beside the ford on Main South Coast Road.
© SamoaPocketGuide.com36. Take a Tour or Hike Yourself to Lake Lanoto’o
A pea-green crater lake set in the Upolu highlands, Lake Lanoto’o is also known as the “Goldfish Lake” after, well, the goldfish that live in the lake.
Getting to this intriguing swimming spot is a worthwhile adventure for those who are fit and able, as there are often plenty of muddy patches to negotiate, as well as its fair share of uphill sections.
Although it is possible to work through the trail yourself, we highly recommend using a guide, such as Samoan Island Adventures, Samoan Highland Hideaway & Adventures and Rainforest Runaway Ecotours to guarantee that you won’t get lost.
Speaking of, long pants and closed footwear are recommended, as is your swimwear to change into.
This national park is also known as a birdwatching spot and can be visited with Coconut Tours’ full-day “Samoa Bird Watching Tour“.

Samoans heavily rely on the tropical produce of its inland plantations, much like the Ifiele’ele Plantation.
Either stay as a guest at the accommodation or book ahead if you’re a group with a minimum of four people to take a tour of this plantation famous across the island for its healthy dried fruit snacks, real fruit ice pops, as well as jams and chutneys.
The plantation experience includes an informative tour of Samoa’s quintessential edible plants (and friendly goats), as well as a coconut demonstration and tastings of jam and dried fruit.

Excellent for birdwatching and even better for getting off the beaten track, the Malololelei Recreation Reserve offers an array of trails through 30 acres of bushland.
Trails are rough, so it’s recommended to go with a guide. Talk to the family (the reserve custodians) who live at the house at the end of the dirt road, who can provide more guidance.
Enjoy waterfalls, picnic areas, swimming holes and a viewing platform overlooking Apia on a series of rough trails that can take one hour to a whole day!
You might spot rare bird species here, one of the highlights featured in Coconut Tours’ “Samoa Bird Watching” experience.
The conservation area is one of the best spots on Upolu for spotting endemic birds, as listed in the 5 Best Places for Bird Watching in Samoa.
Location: Malololelei village. There is no signage for the reserve. Take the Cross Island Road south of Apia and past the Baha’i Temple, turning right onto Kelsey Lane. Follow the road all the way to the 90-degree bend (past the Shrine of the Divine Mercy). The gate to the reserve is located on this bend.
